You Want to Have More Fun This Summer? Fill It with “Why Nots”

Hi Fun Friend,

Do you picture your summer filled with long, hazy, lazy days floating around a lake on a pink flamingo floatie—only to watch the weekends whiz by without a single flotation device or relaxing day in sight?

It can totally happen. If you’re not paying attention. Because fun is a habit, not a season. It almost happened to me this year. The year got off to a big start at work, and my weekends were jam-packed with social activities and a mountain of events. Before I knew it, the months were ticking by, and I had nothing planned for summer.

And I love, love, love summer. Like a full on crush Eeeeks. It didn’t feel good. Not at all. Not one bit. So, I pulled out one of my favourite tools for having more fun in life: being mindful to say “Why not?” more often than “Why?” in a day or a week. Putting it to the test, I asked myself: Why not book a last-minute week off work and turn that pink flamingo floatie vision into reality?

The trick is fighting all the “whys” that want to creep in and take control. And trust me, I had plenty. There were all kinds of reasonable whys that were in a head to head battle with the why nots: The money. The stress of last-minute planning. Rearranging work commitments.

The unpredictable weather that could put my pink flamingo dreams at risk. But I pushed those whys aside (and yes, it was super hard) and “why notted” myself all the way to a week of summer bliss. Even better, a group of my friends found their own “why nots” and joined me.

We belly laughed through the days, danced at the beach, told hundreds of campfire stories on life and hiked through the forest to the most beautiful remote lake for a little skinny dip fun. I asked one friend how difficult it had been for her to say yes to all this fun. She admitted it was really hard. When I asked what whys were fighting against her why nots, she said: Time. Value. Comfort. Was she really going to have a good time? Would it really be worth it?

And phew —three cheers for the answer she discovered: absolutely. Without the why not, she would have stayed home doing the same old, same old. Instead, she created moments and memories that lifted her spirit. She had conversations she never would have had otherwise—conversations that helped her think differently and see new possibilities. She felt bolder. A little wilder. Because she chose “why not,” her confidence and sense of self grew just a little bit more.

Having more fun in your life often starts with one simple question: Why not? Why not: Take a Tuesday afternoon off? Book that outdoor concert featuring your favourite music? Host a picnic in your front yard and invite the neighbours? Drive in a direction without a map and see where the day takes you? Watch the sunset instead of another episode on Netflix?

Create a Summer “Why Not?” List Instead of creating a bucket list filled with pressure and expectations, create a playful Why Not List. A list that invites your summer fun. Ask Yourself One Question: What would make this day, week, or weekend feel summer memorable? Not productive. Not efficient. Memorable.

Because summer isn’t measured by how many weekends you have. It’s measured by how alive you felt during them. So before another Summer Saturday slips by, ask yourself: Why not?

Yours in fun spirit, Treena x 💛
